Inclusive Learning Matters

September is always a month of change, new routines, fresh expectations, and plenty of pressure. It can feel like a lot, both for us and for our learners. That’s why it’s so important to take it step by step. Progress doesn’t come from doing everything at once, but from the small, consistent actions we take each day.

Inclusion reminds us that there’s no single path or perfect way through transition. What matters is that we keep communication open, talk with one another, and remember that it will be ok, even if things look a bit different along the way.

This term is a chance to set the tone: purposeful, balanced, and focused on what really matters, creating spaces where every learner feels they belong and can move forward.

Developing Inclusive Schools: Pathways to Success – Mel Ainscow

I’ve really enjoyed reading this book – it feels like the kind of thoughtful, hopeful work we need right now. What I like most is that Ainscow doesn’t pretend there’s a silver bullet for inclusion. Instead, he takes us on a journey that recognises just how complex schools are, while still keeping the focus on what really matters: making sure every learner is present, participating, and achieving.

Rather than simply updating his earlier work, he’s written what feels like a sequel – part reflection, part challenge, and very much a call to action. He reminds us that inclusion is never one-size-fits-all: every school and every community is different. And most importantly, we need to be unapologetic about putting learners at risk of exclusion, marginalisation, or underachievement right at the centre.

If you’re a leader wanting to move your school forward, this is the book I’d recommend most right now.

Listening Books – affordable audiobook service for learners with SEND or long-term conditions.

Monarch Reader – free tool to personalise texts with fonts, colours, and symbol support.

QR Codes – link learners to recorded stories, instructions, or resources they can scan independently.

E-Books – increase choice with adjustable fonts, text-to-speech, and built-in dictionaries.

Reading is never just about books: Try weaving reading into daily routines — menus at lunch, jokes of the day, recipes in class, or signs around school. These small tweaks make reading meaningful and help learners see it as part of life, not just a lesson.
