August Focus: Using EdTech to remove barriers for every learner

Hello and welcome back,

I hope you’ve had a restful summer. August is always a bridge month — time to pause, reset, and gently turn our thoughts towards September. If you’ve been away from your inbox (as you should!), here’s a quick round-up of what I’ve been sharing and what’s coming up.

Along with other news and information, this month I’m highlighting how the right technology, used well, can open up learning for everyone. When we design lessons with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in mind, we make sure every learner—whatever their starting point—has a way in and a way to shine.

Social Media Spotlight: One Small Change, Big Impact

As you prepare classrooms and corridors for September, think about one small change that could open doors wider for your learners. For example:

• A visual timetable by the door, paired with simple text labels

• A choice board with symbols and words to support recognition

• A “first–then” card showing images and short captions

• A shared communication board that combines pictures with key vocabulary

When we combine images with text, we not only make learning accessible but also reinforce literacy skills in meaningful, everyday contexts.

Small doesn’t mean insignificant — it’s often these everyday adaptations that create environments where all learners can join in and thrive.

Course Spotlight: Adaptive Teaching in Neurodiverse Classrooms

Each month, I’ll leave you with a thought, a takeaway, or a simple idea to spark reflection and action. 

One tool, many uses: Choose one tool you already have—like Immersive Reader or voice typing—and try it in three different ways this week. For example:
• Help learners understand a tricky text with read-aloud and highlighting
• Give an alternative to handwriting with voice typing
• Encourage discussion by having learners read their own writing back to themselves

When one tool is used in different ways, it becomes second nature for staff and students—and that’s when it really starts to remove barriers.
