What next?
As we approach the end of another school term, it is a fabulous time for us to reflect on the learners we have spent the year, getting to know. The importance of connection is firmly established as central to us as humans, supporting engagement, learning, and understanding ourselves and the world around us. This period is crucial for capturing the progress, strengths, motivators and learning profiles of our learners, particularly those with more diverse and complex learning needs. As Professor Barry Carpenter says, it's essential to find out what gets learners engaged and what engagement looks like for us all.
Now is the time to ensure our young people have the best start to the next step on their journey, whether into a new class, school or adult context. We hold the key to unlocking their potential, ensuring they either soar to success or avoid stumbling along the way. Here are some top things to reflect on with links to some of my favourite resources and people.
Celebrate the Insights Gained About Our Young Learners Since September
Learning preferences, interests and motivators - We all have preferences that may differ over time and context, depending on the challenges we face. These preferences allow for more tailored and effective teaching strategies, as well as reduced anxiety and enhanced ability to focus and retain information. Through classroom interactions and activities, we've identified what subjects or activities captivate our learners attention. Whether it’s a book, poem, piece of music, science experiment, or artistic project, knowing what excites them is key!
From sensory support to accessibility we must create an irresistible invitation to learn!

Social connections and relationships - Observing who our learners naturally gravitate towards, interact well with, demonstrate engagement or are happiest with is fundamental to moving on. We might have noticed who forms supportive friendships, and who might need help in building social connections. We will all benefit from good transition plans, and programmes, where our support needs are clear and planned for.

These insights not only help in crafting a more personalised and effective educational experience for all but also strengthen the bond between educators and learners, fostering a more inclusive and engaging school environment.

We must also look after ourselves and ensure we have time to recharge our batteries and reflect. Our wellbeing is more important now than ever before.
