Service Description

This course builds on my previous two sessions and can be a follow on or stand alone resource. Participants will learn about the principles of phonics instruction, including phonemic awareness, decoding, and word recognition, and how to apply these principles in the context of a diverse classroom. Participants will also explore strategies for working with struggling learners with diverse learning needs, including those with dyslexia, ADHD, pre/nonverbal learners and learners with more complex special educational needs. The session will focus on - • Developing an understanding of the principles of phonics instruction and its role within reading • Identify strategies for developing phonemic awareness in struggling learners and understands its importance • Apply decoding and word recognition strategies to improve reading skills in struggling learners • Analyse the specific needs of neurodiverse learners and adapt phonics instruction accordingly • Developing multi-sensory approaches and strategies that provide accessible, meaningful and engaging ways in for all (including older learners) • Use technology and other tools to support phonics instruction for struggling learners. • Evaluate the effectiveness of phonics instruction for struggling learners within a neurodiverse classroom and plan next steps to develop our practice • Look at tools to develop our practice at a whole school level using the new reading audit (Moseley and Sullivan 2023) and ensure effective whole school engagement This 3 hour course provides a greater depth and time to discuss effective approaches, focus on specific strategies to move practice forward and network with others from mainstream and special school contexts. Participants will receive a Wakelet packed with resources and ideas as well as 10% off the Reading and Spelling Audit (Moseley and Sullivan) published at the end of May.
